Canoeing On Upper Iowa River

Go back to Past Troop Activities

It was a beautiful morning for canoeing.  Everyone strapped on their PFD's and paired up with their canoe partner so we could get going.

The water was up due to recent rains, and the low hanging tree branches presented some surprising obstacles, especially since the current was fast along the river banks.

Bridges were convenient stopping points to rest, and to make sure the group got back together before continuing down the river.

The scenery was very pretty in the spring, with many shades of green visible against the backdrop of limestone cliffs.

Natural formations such as the columns in this picture were even more impressive when seen first hand!

The day passed quickly, and before we knew it we were at the landing.

We didn't get much resistance to posing for a group picture, as everyone was pretty tired after six hours on the river.

We found out that canoeing on an active river like the Upper Iowa was much different than on the lake at Scout Camp.  I think everyone had a good time, and would like to return someday for more canoeing fun on the Upper Iowa River.
